MSU Crew Completes Day On The Grand River

LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan rowing team completed a successful day on the water playing host to the Head of the Grand. There was plenty of competition for the MSU rowing team, including teams from Eastern Michigan and Grand Valley State.
The Spartans had two boats competing in the first event of the day, the `A' and `B' varsity fours came in second (12:41) and third (12:54) behind the `A' crew from Eastern Michigan (12:34). The Spartan `C' varsity four finished second (13:17) to Eastern Michigan's `C' flight (13:09) in a later event.
Then it was on to the varsity eight event, and the Spartans excelled. The Spartan `A' varsity eight came in first place with a course time of 11:05. The Michigan State `B' crew finished second (11:11) and the `C' shell came in fourth (11:43) behind the Eastern Michigan `A' boat (11:37). In all, 10 shells competed in the varsity eight race.
The Spartan rowers were also given a chance to break out some lesser used boats, as three MSU single shells and four Michigan State doubles took to the water in the open event. Rowers Christen Brown (senior), Ashley Holmes-Heron (freshman) and Kirsten Rasanen (senior) competed in singles for the Spartans, placing seventh (14:05), ninth (14:26), and tenth (14:32) against mixed fours and doubles from other teams. The Spartan doubles crew of Anne Cowan (sophomore) and Paula Thoms (junior) finished second (13:14), the highest Michigan State finishers of the event. Also competing were doubles crews consisting of Joanna Brown (sophomore) and Abby Wieber (senior), Roz Bialczak (junior) and Suzanne Buzzell (junior), and Kate Burdick (sophomore) and Sarah Brady (senior). Brown/Wieber finished third (13:25), Bialzcak/Buzzell finished fourth (13:36), and Burdick/Brady finished sixth (13:59).
The Spartan novice crew also enjoyed its first time on the water with four boats participating in two novice events. In the first novice event, the `A' novice eight placed first, with a time of 12:52, and the `B' novice eight finished fourth (13:30) behind Grand Valley State `A' (13:05) and Grand Valley State `B' (13:25). In a later novice event, the Michigan State `C' and `D' novice eights finished first (12:38) and second (13:40), respectively, with the Grand Valley State `C' novice eight boat finishing third (14:08).
