EAST LANSING, Mich. - Chuck Sleeper, who joined the Ralph Young Fund staff in October 2002, has been promoted to the position of senior associate athletics director for development, according to an announcement made Tuesday, Oct. 4 by Michigan State Athletics Director Ron Mason. In his new role, Sleeper heads all fundraising efforts for the athletics department. He replaces Chris Ritrievi, who resigned in late July to become associate athletics director for external relations at the University of Utah.
Sleeper previously served as assistant athletics director of development and director of major gifts. He has played a key role for the Office of Athletic Development, which has raised $72.9 million towards its $76 million goal as part of the $1.2 billion university-wide capital campaign, "The Campaign for MSU." In addition to assisting with the 2004 implementation of the Scholarship Seating program, Sleeper has taken a lead role in the Spartan Stadium expansion project and the "New Life for Old College Field" campaign. These projects, along with the renovation of the Duffy Daugherty Football Building, are the focus of the Office of Athletic Development for the remainder of "The Campaign for MSU," which concludes on June 30, 2007.
Prior to his appointment at Michigan State, he served as assistant athletics director for development at Arizona State University for two-and-a-half years where he spearheaded capital and endowment fundraising. From 1992-2000, Sleeper worked as associate athletics director for development at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He played a key role in helping Cal Poly make the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. During his tenure at Cal Poly, Sleeper led the Mustangs' first-ever capital campaign that enabled the program to complete a $12-million sports complex, including new softball and baseball stadiums, renovation of the basketball facility and construction of a new weight room. He also held positions in athletics administration at Grand Valley State and the University of Michigan.
Sleeper earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Grand Valley State in 1983 and received a master's degree in sports administration from St. Thomas University in 1986.
