As the fall term of the 2005-06 school year comes to a close, the Big Ten recognizes a total of 603 fall sports athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference Team. Fifty-five student-athletes from Michigan State made the fall 2006 list, including a school-record 18 football players. The list of honored student-athletes features 53 men's and 88 women's cross country runners, 54 field hockey players, 159 football players, 57 men's and 127 women's soccer athletes and 65 volleyball players. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
At least nine Big Ten student-athletes have maintained unblemished GPAs. A trio of women's cross country runners boast a 4.0 GPA in Minnesota's Allison Joelson (So., Elementary Education) and the Purdue duo Anne Dillavou (So., Retail Management) and Anne King (Jr., Industrial Engineering). In women's soccer, Minnesota's Hailey McCarthy (So., International Business), Purdue's Kate Mills (So., Movement and Sports Science) and Wisconsin's Jessica Ring (Gr., Sociology/Pre-Law) have all earned a perfect GPA. In football, Indiana's Kevin Trulock (So., Biology) and Iowa's Adam Shada (So., Pre-Business) also claimed 4.0 GPAs, while Purdue's Leah Wischmeier (Sr., Health Sciences) has maintained a 4.0 as a member of the Boilermaker volleyball team.
The Big Ten Academic All-Conference award winners also achieved excellence outside of the classroom. In cross country, Tim Nelson (Jr., Communications Arts) and Christian Wagner (So., Engineering Mechanics) placed 18th and 58th, respectively, to help the Wisconsin men's squad finish first at the NCAA Championship and earn its fourth national title in school history, while Illinois' Cassie Hunt (Jr., Sport Management) was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year after claiming her first individual conference title. In field hockey, Indiana's Kayla Bashore (Gr., Biology) collected Player of the Year accolades as she led the Hoosiers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Penn State's Kaleena Walters (Sr., Psychology) was tabbed volleyball's Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Nittany Lions to their third consecutive Big Ten title. In women's soccer, PSU's Tiffany Weimer (Sr., Journalism) collected Offensive Player of the Year laurels for the second consecutive year, while Penn State's Lindsay Bach (Gr., Communications Sciences and Disorders) and Illinois' Christen Karniski (Sr., English) shared Defensive Player of the Year accolades. In men's soccer, Northwestern's Brad Napper (Sr., Sociology) and Brad North (Jr., Radio/Television/Film) and the Penn State duo of Conrad Taylor (So., Health and Human Development) and David Walters (Sr., Recreation and Park Management) earned All-Big Ten first-team honors. On the football field, three Academic All-Big Ten performers have already been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first-team in Indiana's Will Meyers (Jr., Accounting), Iowa's Mike Elgin (Sr., Mechanical Engineering) and Penn State's Paul Posluszny (Jr., Finance).
