
MSU Baseball Drops Home Opener To Wayne State, 9-4

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomores Ryan Basham (Lowell, Ind.) and Sean Walker (Round Lake, Ill.) each recorded two hits and a home run, but could not help the Michigan State baseball team overcome six errors in a 9-4 loss to Wayne State Wednesday, March 30, in its home opener at Kobs Field. Basham went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Walker was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Wayne State (10-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Jason Chapieski led off the game with a single through the left side and later scored on a run-scoring double by senior Frank Jeney. Two batters later, Jeney crossed home plate thanks to a single by junior Adwin Springer to left field. A solo home run by Basham to left center off WSU starter Dan Barnes sliced Michigan State's deficit in half at 2-1.
The Warriors took advantage of three Spartan errors to score in the second inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded walk by MSU starter Mark Sorensen (Northville, Mich) to senior Bobby Marten.
The Spartans (8-11) cut Wayne State's lead to 4-3 in the third inning on a solo homer by Walker and an RBI single by Basham, scoring sophomore shortstop Troy Krider (Coldwater, Mich.), who reached on a single. State tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Krider that scored sophomore center fielder Adam Tripp (Saugas, Calif.), who reached on an error in the previous at-bat.
An RBI single by sophomore Chris Baroli off MSU reliever Chris Cullen (Tecumseh, Ont.) scored Springer, who led off the frame with a double, giving Wayne State a 5-4 lead.
The Warriors added three more runs in the eighth inning off two Spartan errors and an RBI single by Springer, increasing their lead to 8-4. Marten singled home WSU's final run in the ninth inning to provide the final margin.
Jeney (3-for-5, two doubles, RBI), Springer (3-for-4, double, RBI) and Baroli (3-for-5, RBI) each recorded three hits to lead Wayne State on the offensive end. Freshman Ryan Mosher (3-1) earned the win for the Warriors after giving up only one hit and striking out three in two innings of relief.
Cullen (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing one run on two hits in one and one-third innings in relief. Sorensen allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in three innings of work. Sorensen also struck out a season-best four batters and walked two.
The Spartans open Big Ten play with a four-game series at Iowa beginning Friday, April 1, at 6 p.m.
