UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (11-10, 1-8 Big Ten) suffered a 5-2 loss to Penn State (7-10, 2-7) on Friday (April 22) at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Penn State took an early 1-0 lead over the Spartans after sweeping all three doubles matches. Michigan State once again set itself in a high-pressured situation heading into singles play.
Sophomores Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) and Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) picked up the Spartans' only two points of the match after winning their singles matches in straight sets. At No. 3, Schnitzer kept a strong hold over PSU's Sarah Spence in the first set winning, 6-4, and battled through a close second set, winning 7-6(5) to take the match. Andrews also performed well for MSU although at No. 6. She lost the first set, 4-6, to Penn State's Katelyn BeVard, but fought back in the next two, 6-2, 6-4 for the point.
Senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) again saw herself in a three-set match for the eighth time this year. Thompson grabbed the first set, 7-6(7), but PSU's Maaria Husain surpassed the Spartan in the next two, taking both sets, 6-3.
No. 4 singles also saw a tight three-set match as PSU's Andreea Niculescu defeated Spartan sophomore Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.), 3-6, 6-4, (10-8).
Michigan State will resume play on Sunday (April 24) at No. 40 Indiana to close out the Big Ten regular season.
