Men's Track And Field Excels At Hillsdale Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Michigan State men's track and field team had a successful weekend of competition at the Hillsdale College "Gina" Relays, grabbing five first-place finishes including a new meet record during the competition. Steve Sherer was the record-breaker for the Spartans, winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:04.31 while beating a field of 141 runners.
Jeremy Orr also had an impressive day for MSU, winning the 100-meter dash in a field of 55 with a time of 10.57 seconds, while placing second out of 54 runners in the 200-meter dash (21.38). March Dillon was seventh in the 100 (11.00) and Kyle Sweeney 10th (11.09), while Ricco Roby placed ninth in the 200 (22.48) and 15th in the 100 (11.18).
John Childress was another first-place finisher for MSU, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 14.38 seconds. Kyle Sweeney was seventh in that event, clocking 15.10 seconds.
In the pole vault, Mike Palmer was the winner, clearing 17-0 3/4, while Mark Langlois placed fourth (15-0). Julien Williams took the long jump title, soaring 25-5 1/4. Both Palmer and Williams easily surpassed the NCAA Regional qualifying standards with their marks.
In the 1500-meter run, Jim Pancoast placed third with a time of 3:52.20, while Phil Marlatt was fifth (3:52.59) and Jon Wojcik 15th (3:55.93). Andy Marsh was third in the 10,000 with a time of 29:20.27, while Matt Bartlebaugh placed sixth (29:43.10). In the 400, Scott Sweeney was 17th (49.89) and Kevin Dacres 19th (50.14).
Anthony Thomas placed 10th in the high jump for MSU, clearing 6-2, while Jason Brown was 11th in the shot put (48-6) and Derek Strittmatter was 16th in the discus (147-8).
The MSU men's track and field team will be off until competing at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships May 13-15 in Columbus, Ohio.
