
Women's Golf Tied For 12th At NCAA Championships

SUNRIVER, Ore. - On a cold and windy day, Michigan State women's golf improved three spots into a tie for 12th with Florida after two rounds of action at the 2005 NCAA Championships on Wednesday, May 18. State shot a second-round 301, the sixth-best score on the day, and combined with its first-round 304 has a two-day total of 605. This year's championship is being played at the par-71, 6,312-yard Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
Pepperdine (586) and Auburn (586) are tied for first with a 586 as the two schools had entered the day in third and fourth place, respectively. Rounding out the top-five leader board is: UCLA, third with a 590; California, fourth with a 594 and Duke, fifth with a 595.
Freshman Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) continues to pace the Spartan squad as she is tied for 17th after the second day of play with a 148. Brown shot a 77 on day two after firing an even par 71 in Tuesday's first round of play.
Four players pace the individual leader board as UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, Auburn's Diana Ramage, Southern Cal's Dewi Schreefel and Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas all have shot a two-round 144.
Sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) led the way for MSU on day two with a 2-over 73 to improve three shots from Tuesday's first-round 76. McConnell's second round included birdies on holes one, two and 17 and five bogeys. She is currently tied for 24th with a two-round 149 (76-73).
However, it was sophomore Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) that improved six shots from Tuesday's opening round. After posting an 80 on Tuesday, Rose fired a 3-over 74 with three birdies and six bogeys in her round. She has a two-round score of 154 and is tied for 70th.
Junior Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) also is tied for 70th after posting back-to-back rounds of 77. Sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) rounds out the Spartan line-up in a tie for 112th after back-to-back rounds of 80 for a two-round total of 160.
Third-round action from the NCAA Championships continues on Thursday, May 19 with tee times starting at 9 a.m. PT. The final round of action will be held on Friday, May 20.
