EAST LANSING, Mich. - Windermere, Fla., native Julien Williams has had a very successful outdoor season. Williams has won five long jump titles and took second place at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, recording Michigan State's fourth all-time best leap in the long jump, posting a distance of 25-1 3/4 feet.
This Friday (May 27) Williams competes at the NCAA Regionals. He is tied for the third seed in the long jump.
Q. Summarize your outdoor season for me.
A. Outdoor season I started out PRing and was happy about that. I went through a couple of lows; had some hamstring problems. Then the new coach (Randy Huntington) came in and I PRed by pretty much a whole foot and it put me in pretty good standings for Nationals. I am just happy about this year because I have not been in any national contention since I have been here.
Q. Were you expecting this much success for this season?
A. I wanted to. Wanting and expecting is different, so I wanted to get there but I didn't know if I would. I am happy but I want to get a little farther before the end of the year; I have two more meets.
Q. Do you have any goals for Regionals?
A.Top three; hopefully a distance of about 25-7.
Q. Why did you choose to come to Michigan State?
A. My family is from Flint and I grew up liking the Spartans, big school, big name. I came in as a preferred walk on.
Q. Where does your motivation come from?
A. Family, my father and uncles. They have had big success in sports and I am just trying to follow their lead.
Q. How long have you been long jumping?
A. About six years, since early high school.
Q. If you won the lottery what would you do with the money?
A. I would buy a bunch of music studios and get someone to run them and make a profit off of that. I like soul and soulful hip hop. My favorite artist would be Slum Village.
Q. What is your greatest fear?
A. Injury because you can't do anything about it but be patient and wait.
