EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State women's soccer team will square off against the Eagles of Eastern Michigan, Saturday, Aug. 20 at 12:00 p.m., in an exhibition match at Old College Field. The contest marks the beginning of the 20th anniversary season of the Spartan soccer program.
The Spartans finished off the 2005 season with a 12-7-1 mark, reaching the double-digit win plateau for the fifth-straight season. MSU returns 22 letterwinners from 2004, including five of its top six scorers from last season.
Forwards Emma Harris (5-5-15), Dana Voorheis (4-2-10) and Jenee Witherspoon (4-4-12) paced the Green and White front line last season, while Maureen Pawlak (5-5-15) and Erin Konheim (5-4-14) added to the attack from the midfield position. MSU is 8-6-1 all-time against the Eagles, including a 4-3-1 mark at home, and has out-scored EMU by an 18-5 margin in those 15 matches.
The Spartans won a late-season, non-conference match-up against Eastern, 1-0 in 2004, their third consecutive shutout against the Eagles.
Following the exhibition contest, Michigan State begins regular-season play with a pair of games at Kentucky and Cincinnati on Aug. 26 and 28, respectively. Those matches mark the beginning of 10 straight non-conference games for the MSU women, before kicking off the Big Ten schedule Sunday, Sept. 25 at home versus Ohio State.
