EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis has announced the Spartans' schedule for the 2005-06 season. A grand total of 19 regular-season meets have been scheduled between both the men's and women's programs, with the women slated to appear at 11 events while the men are set for nine outings.
"I believe that we have a very good and challenging schedule for this season," remarked Gianiodis. "We are set to dual five men's and women's teams that were ranked in the top 25 in the nation last year. That can only help us as we look to advance to the NCAA Championships this season."
State opens the year at IM West Pool on Oct. 21, as Grand Valley State will arrive on campus in an evening meet scheduled for 5 p.m. Both the men's and women's teams will battle the Lakers in the squad's first action of the season. The following day, Oct. 22, the Spartans host their annual Alumni Meet at 9 a.m.
Next on tap for the Green and White, the MSU women's team opens its Big Ten schedule as they face off against in-state rival Michigan in Ann Arbor, Oct. 28. Last season, the Wolverines defeated the Spartans 159-133 at IM West.
The following Friday (Nov. 4), both the men's and women's teams will battle against Big Ten foes Purdue and Northwestern in West Lafayette, Ind., before returning to IM West to host Notre Dame in men's action, Nov. 11.
The men hit the road on Nov. 18, as it is their turn to face Michigan in Ann Arbor in Big Ten Conference action. Next, the Spartans are slated to attend the Ohio State Invitational, Dec. 2-4, in Columbus, Ohio.
State closes out year with a Saturday, Dec. 10 meet at Ball State in Muncie, Ind. Both the men's and women's teams are scheduled to attend the final meet before winter break.
From Dec. 27-Jan. 7, MSU heads to Nassau, Bahamas, for its annual training trip. During its time on the island, State will take on Indiana (Jan. 1) and Nebraska (Jan. 6).
The Spartans wrap-up the regular season at home, hosting three of their final meets at IM West. Oakland (Jan. 20), Notre Dame (Jan. 21) and St. Bonaventure (Jan. 28) will arrive in East Lansing to swim against the Spartans.
The women open Big Ten post-season action, as they head to the campus of Ohio State University to battle at the 2006 Big Ten Championships, Feb. 15-18. The men follow suit one week later, as they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for their Big Ten Championship outing.
The NCAA Diving Zones are slated for March 11-13 with a location still to be determined.
The 2006 NCAA Women's Championships are set for March 16-18 in Athens, Ga., while the NCAA Men's Championships will be held March 23-25 in Atlanta, Ga.
Lastly on the Spartan swimming and diving schedule, USA Swimming Nationals are set for March 28-April 1 in Federal Way, Wash.
