The MSU rowing team will face its first competition of the fall season Sunday afternoon at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich. While fall racing is very different from the spring season, it gives the rowing team the opportunity to reinforce some of the training it has been through this fall.
"We put some races in just to test our training," MSU rowing head coach Matt Weise said.
Fall racing is different from the spring head-to-head competitions. The boats take off at staggered intervals, racing against the clock, as opposed to spring racing, when all crews take off at the same time. It helps teams perfect their techniques and see what skills need more work over the winter.
"It's more or less a time to practice being in a race situation," Weise revealed. "You evaluate where your weaknesses are, and work on those weaknesses over the winter, so they're not weaknesses in the spring."
