EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kent State entered Saturday's game winless, but had a history of playing well against Michigan State. This weekend would be no different, as the Golden Flashes gave the Spartans all they asked for in MSU's tight 2-1 win over KSU in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Kent State got on the board early, when Mel Bierens De Mann tipped a corner past Michigan State's Christina Kirkaldy in the twelfth minute.
It would be almost 14 minutes later until the Spartans could generate offense of their own. Once again, it would be MSU seniors that got things going. Leading scorer, senior forward, Michelle Huynh-Ba scored her sixth goal of the season at 25:11, tying the game at one all. Classmate, midfielder Jessica Miller recorded the assist.
Freshman back Inge Kaars Sijpestijn broke the deadlock in the second half, at 48:08. Miller and senior Breanna Harpstead each were credited with an assist, bringing Miller's total to a team leading five on the year. Kirkaldy tallied four saves in the win.
The 7-1 Spartans play again tomorrow, when they face the three-time defending National Champion Wake Forest at 1 p.m. The Demon Deacons have a perfect 5-0 record and were ranked first in the nation in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches released earlier this week.
