BELLEVILLE, Mich. - Michigan State rowing joined the crews from Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, and Michigan on Belleville Lake Sunday afternoon seeking friendly competition. Although no official results were kept, it gave all crews the opportunity to get out on the water to practice their techniques before a long, intense training schedule in preparation for their spring seasons.
"The crews rowed pretty well, considering they've only been training for a couple weeks," head coach Matt Weise said. "It sets a good tone for the fall season to have a meet within the first two weeks. It gives the rowers something to train for during the summer, so they're in better shape in the fall."
Overall, the Spartan rowers lived up to the expectations they set for themselves going into Sunday's event. The meet was intended to give the rowers a chance to work out their techniques, as well as gain some experience on the water in a competitive setting.
"Our goal going into today was to hold on to some technical changes we made during the week," Weise said, "and most of the team accomplished that. It was also a chance for the girls to evaluate their performances themselves and identify their weaknesses."
