EAST LANSING, Mich. - Tammy Farnum, an assistant women's soccer coach at Michigan State the last nine years, has been promoted to the position of associate head coach, according to an announcement made Wednesday, Jan. 11 by Spartan head coach Tom Saxton. In the fall of 2005, Farnum helped the Spartans to their second-ever trip to the NCAA Championship and the team's fifth consecutive season with double-digit win totals.
"Tammy Farnum has been an integral part of the continued growth of the Michigan State women's soccer program," Saxton said. "I appreciate the fact that Ron Mason, Shelley Appelbaum, and our department recognizes the tremendous contribution Tammy has made to our program. Tammy is an outstanding coach, and she has turned down many head coaching opportunities out of her loyalty to Michigan State athletics. She is a true Spartan, and this promotion is well-deserved."
Prior to her time at Michigan State, Farnum served as both the head women's soccer coach and women's athletic director at Alma College from 1994-1997. She also serves as a member of the Michigan Olympic Development Coaching staff, where she led her team to the National ODP championship in March 2001. A former Spartan standout, Farnum lettered at MSU from 1989-1992 and served as a co-captain her senior season while competing for the Green and White. While at Michigan State, Farnum earned her bachelor's degree in physical education and completed her master's degree in exercise science in 1994. Farnum is married to James, head softball coach and assistant professor, at Olivet College. The couple has two daughters, Adalin (3) and Kate (born in June 2005).
