In the No.1 singles spot, sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) fell 6-0, 6-1 to the No. 47 nationally-ranked Taka Bertrand. Junior Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) also lost by a score of 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to Amanda Fish.
Juniors Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) and Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) both had competitive matches, but came up short to the Commodores. Baron won her first set, 7-5 against Amanda Taylor, but Taylor went on to win the next two sets, 6-1 and 6-2. At the No.4 spot, Andrews lost to Courtney Ulrey, 7-5, 7-5.
Stephanie Kebler lost to fellow freshman Maggie Yahner in her match at the No. 5 singles spot, 6-0, 7-5.
"Its early in the season and there are a variety of tactical things we need to work on," said coach Tim Bauer, "but, I think more than any else we just need to work on refining that competitor's mindset."
Vanderbilt took the doubles point with all three teams earning victories. In the No. 1 doubles slot, Bader and Andrews lost to Bertrand and Fish, 8-1. In the other doubles matches, both Baron and Kebler and the freshman doubles duo of Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) fell, 8-2.
"As coaches we want our team to understand that they can compete with the best," said Bauer. "A match like that can help us teach them important things about competing against good players. A team can take a match early on like this and know they can compete against the best and that they're only going to get better through the season."
Michigan State returns for its home opener on Jan. 22 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility where the Spartans will take on Detroit at 10 a.m. and Cleveland State at 4 p.m.
