Senior Christie Daiss (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) has made two trips to the NCAA Championships, as the five-seat in the second varsity eight as a sophomore, and last season as an alternate. Daiss adds leadership and depth to the MSU rowing team with her years of rowing experience.
Have you always wanted to attend MSU?
Yes, I grew up around here, and this was the only school I applied to.
Did you know you wanted to row in college?
I wasn't sure. I'd never rowed before I came here. My track coach sent my name in when I was a senior and I just decided to try out. I like sports and I wanted to be involved with a team while I was here, so I stuck with it.
How has your athletic background helped you be a better rower?
It got me ready to be a part of a team and work with other people.
In what ways are your experiences with different sports similar?
The training is very similar. You have to be mentally there to put the effort into what you're doing, and I did a lot of strength training in high school as well.
Looking back on your rowing career so far, what is your favorite moment?
I would have to say winning the Big Ten Championship last year, because that's the most exciting thing that has happened for our team as a program. I think it gave us a real boost and something to work for this season.
What has rowing done for you as a person?
I think it has made me stronger and given me a lot more confidence in myself. Before I started, I didn't know what I could do, so I tried rowing. It pushed me mentally and physically, and it taught me how to be stronger and compete. It taught me a lot about myself.
What is one piece of advice you would give a novice coming in with no previous rowing experience?
Don't be afraid to try. Try something new, because you never know what you can do until you try it. You learn a lot about yourself when you're trying new things.
