Women's Swimming And Diving Defeats Akron In Home Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team captured its first win of the season against Akron on Friday night. The Spartans took first place in 11 of the 16 events, and had one-two finishes in three events to defeat Akron, 186-114. Three MSU freshman captured event titles in their first collegiate meet.
Among the divers, senior Katie Edwards finished first on both the one-meter board with 271.05 points, and also on the three- meter board with 248.10.
Sophomore Marlys Fuqua finished first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:32.29, and was followed by freshman Emma Schaeffer in second with a time of 10:36.27.
The freshman class showed their speed with Mara Loniewski taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:53.70) while Sasha Lewerenz won the 100 backstroke (57.75) and 200 backstroke (2:04.92); and Laura DeFord placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.82).
Sophomore Julianne Kahn also collected two wins, taking out her competition in the 50 freestyle (24.75) and the 100 freestyle (53.32).
The women's swimming and diving team will continue their four-meet homestand against Big Ten opponent Illinois at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Charles McCaffree Pool in the IM West Building.
