
Spartans Fall To No. 5 Ohio State In Second Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In the final two minutes of regulation, Becky Manning tied up the game 3-3, allowing the Michigan State field hockey team to take the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes into overtime. The game went into double overtime, but 4:22 in the second overtime period Linda Haussener found Saskia Mueller to give OSU a 4-3 win over the Spartans.
MSU got on the board first with a goal by Anne-Sophie van Rijswijk on MSU's only shot of the first period; Ashley Pernicano was awarded an assist on the goal. The Buckeyes answered back with a goal at 24:46 by Curlyne Wynn to knot up the game 1-1. As the first half began to wind down, Lauren Kruse put Ohio State up 2-1 with a goal at 33:15.
Ohio State had six shots and two penalty corners, compared to one shot and no corners by MSU. Spartan goalkeeper Stephanie Yuhasz had four saves in the half.
In the second half, the Spartans once again struck first, to even the score at 2-2 on a penalty corner at 40:15 by Geraldine Raynor. At 61:40 Jamie Gofgosky put the Buckeyes on top once again, scoring off a pass by Mueller. As the clock wound in regulation, Manning was able to get the Spartans back in the game, scoring at 68:23 to force overtime with a tie score, 3-3.
In the first overtime period, OSU outshot the Spartans 4-0, but was unable to capitalize. It wasn't until the second period of overtime play that the Buckeyes would walk away with the win on a goal by Mueller.
Ohio State was awarded 10 penalty corners, while MSU received only one. The Buckeyes also out shot the Spartans 21-5. In goal for OSU, Lindsay Quintiliani had two saves, while Yuhasz closed out the game with nine.
Michigan State will return tomorrow for its final regular season game against Ohio University at 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.
