Kinkopf Advances To Main Draw At Big Ten Indoors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan State freshman Brendan Kinkopf picked up a first round win and a second round bye in the qualifying portion of the Big Ten Singles Championship, advancing to the main draw on Nov. 11. Three other Spartans competed on day one of the championship, but were unable to advance.
Kinkopf defeated Purdue's Jose Fuenmayer in round one, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. With the bye, Kinkopf was one of eight players remaining from the qualifying pool of 32 and advanced to the main draw. He will face Penn State's James Dwyer in the pool of 64 tomorrow.
MSU's Britton Steele, Alex Allon and Scott Rausmussen also competed in the qualifying bracket, but exited the tournament with first-round losses. Each will enter the consolation bracket.
Jason Norville, Tyler Sauerbrey, John Allare, Alex Forger and 11th seeded Michael Flowers will join KinKopf in the main draw after earning automatic bids.
The first and second rounds of the 64-player main draw are scheduled to begin Saturday (Nov. 11, 8 a.m.). The third round and quarterfinals will be played on Sunday (Nov. 12, 10 a.m.), and the tournament will wrap up with the semifinals and championship match on Monday (Nov. 13, 9 a.m.).
