WYANDOTTE, Mich. - The Michigan State rowing team had a successful day, capturing wins in the varsity eight and novice eight at the Heritage Classic Regatta on Sunday. The Michigan State "B" novice eight collected a second place finish behind the "A" boat.
"We had a fairly good day," said head coach Matt Weise. "Everybody raced like they practice; the boats that raced well are the boats that practice well. Then there are some boats that are not as consistent in practice and it showed up on race day."
The varsity eight of coxswain Katie Bitz, Roz Bialczak, Joanna Brown, Michelle Mussett, Erika Shaw, Anne Cowan, Paula Thoms, Sarah Schmidt, and Kate Burdick captured first with a time of 15:24.00, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the Michigan crew which took second. The Wolverine second eight finished in third (15:57.13), and the Michigan State second varsity boat took fourth (16:20.53) in the ten-boat race.
In the novice eight event, Michigan State boats finished one-two, with the "A" boat coming across the line in 17:59.56, followed by the MSU "B" eight with a time of 18:27.51. The boats finished ahead of competitors from the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan and the Michigan State Crew Club. The Spartan "C" boat came in eighth with a time of 21:13.99, defeating the novice boat from Windsor Crew.
In the varsity four, Michigan State turned in a time of 18:54.81, which landed the Spartans a fifth-place finish behind crews from East Michigan and the University of Michigan.
The Spartans concluded their fall season at the Heritage Classic.
