ATHENS, Ohio - Anthony Gressick scattered 10 hits over five innings and blasted a three-run homer to help his own cause as Ohio defeated Michigan State, 7-5, Sunday afternoon as the Bobcats earned a split in the final game of the four-game series.
Michigan State (6-8) held a brief 1-0 advantage after the first-half inning, but that would be the only lead the Spartans would enjoy on the day. Gressick put the Bobcats on top 3-1, with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. It marked the fifth three-run homer of the series.
Ohio (5-5) posted three more runs in the third to build a 6-1 lead.
Michigan State chipped away at the five-run deficit, scoring a run in the fifth and the sixth, plus adding two runs in the seventh to pull to within one at 6-5. The Bobcats put an insurance run on the board in the bottom of the seventh and held on for the 7-5 win.
The Spartans missed out on a comeback opportunity, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth inning. MSU stranded a season-high 16 runners in the game.
Gressick (2-0) picked up the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs while recording seven strikeouts. Spartan starter Craig Brookes (0-2) took the loss, surrendering three earned runs and five hits over five innings.
Kyle Day hit 2-for-3 with a double for the Spartans, while Oliver Wolcott and Troy Krider each went 2-for-4.
Michigan State opens its home schedule March 25-26, with a three-game series against Western Illinois.
