Marion, Va. - After a week of intensive training, the defending Big Ten champion Michigan State rowing team will begin its season with a series of exhibition races against Virginia. The 1,000-meter training pieces will be raced on the lake at Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, Va., a new racing site for both teams.
The Spartans and the Cavaliers know each other well. Last season, the then-No.11 Spartan varsity eight upset the then-No. 6 Cavaliers in an April 1 regatta in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers returned the favor, defeating all Spartan shells (first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four) in the South/Central Sprints on their way to a first place finish in the region on May 15. The Cavalier and Spartan second varsity eights met in the grand final at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championship, and the Cavaliers claimed victory and the national title, while the Spartan boat finished fifth in the race.
The first race will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
