Michigan State Wraps Up Day One At Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Michigan State men's track and field team continued the 2006 outdoor season with a quartet of top-20 finishers in the distance events at the Stanford Invitational Friday night. Junior Matt Bartlebaugh (Jackson, Mich.) led the way for the Green and White, posting an eighth-place performance in the 10,000-meter section 'B' finals, in a time of 29:29.87, a personal best. Bartlebaugh's time was also good enough to provisionally qualify for NCAA competition.
Junior Jim Pancoast (Stevensville, Mich.) added an 11th-place finish in the 'B' finals of the 1,500 meters. Pancoast recorded a time of 3:51.98, to finish less than a second outside of the top 10.
Senior Nick Oertel (Goodrich, Mich.) and sophomore Stephan Shay (East Jordan, Mich.) posted 16th- and 17th-place performances in the 'B' section finals of the 5,000 meters, respectively. Oertel crossed the line in 14:10.88, while Shay was less than a second behind at 14:11.38, both were personal bests.
The Spartans will conclude competition at the Stanford Invitational Saturday, April 1, beginning at 9 a.m. PST.
