EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State's women's tennis team played their final non-conference contest of the season, shutting out Valparaiso, 7-0. The win improves the Spartans' record to 12-8, and ends a five match Crusader winning streak. MSU looks to improve on their Big Ten record this weekend as they travel to play Ohio State, on April 15.
The Spartans swept all the doubles matches to quickly take the match's first point. At the No. 1 double spot, Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) blanked Rachel Janssen and Jen Schwartz, 8-0. Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and Ana Milosavljevis (Johannesburg, South Africa) also won, 8-0, defeating Charmaine Stanislaw and Jill Dierberg in the No. 3 spot. Junior Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) were also victorious in their doubles match.
Singles action saw the Spartans continue their momentum by taking all six matches. Bader defeated Janssen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot, while at No. 2, Schnitzer also won in straight sets, beating Dierberg, 6-2, 6-1.
Juniors Baron and Andrews also came up with impressive victories at the No. 3 and 5 spots, respectively. Baron faced off against Chada, downing her 6-0, 6-1, while Andrews played Stanislaw, taking both sets, 6-0, 6-1.
MSU's freshmen also contributed to the Spartans' shutout victory. At the No. 4 spot, Kebler defeated Evangelist, 6-2, 6-1, who was 14-5 was undefeated in four straight, before her match against Kebler. Milosavljevic played at the No. 6 spot again this match, downing Kim Sajevic, 6-0, 7-5. Milosavljevic now boasts two straight wins in as many tries.
The Spartans return to action this weekend, when they take on Ohio State, in Columbus. The Buckeyes are currently 13-8 and 3-3 in the Big Ten. Play will begin at 11 a.m.
