MADISON, Wisc. - The Michigan State rowing team capped the regular season with strong performances, winning three races in the morning against Wisconsin before sweeping afternoon races against Iowa. The MSU first and second varsity eight won both races, while the varsity four beat boats from Wisconsin and Michigan twice.
"The team really progressed well this week," rowing head coach Matt Weise said. "Some of our morning races had some small kinks, but the team really ironed them out in the afternoon."
The Michigan State varsity eight won handily in both races, beating Wisconsin by eight seconds and sailed to the finish almost 11 seconds ahead of its Hawkeye counterpart. The MSU second varsity eight also crossed the finish line ahead of both its opponents.
The Spartan varsity four raced boats from Michigan and Wisconsin in both the morning and afternoon races, (Iowa did not race a varsity four); the MSU shell came away with victories in both contests.
The second varsity four fell to both Wisconsin crews in the morning, but rebounded in the afternoon with a time of (7:46.8), good for the victory over the Badger lightweight crew (7:48.3).
The MSU novice eights fell to Wisconsin in the morning events, then rebounded in the afternoon races. After being beaten by the Badgers by more than 15 seconds, the Spartan novice eight downed its Iowa counterpart by 18 seconds, 6:46.9 to 7:04.4. The second novice eight lost by three quarters of a length to Wisconsin, finishing behind them by less than three seconds, then downed the Hawkeyes by less than half a length, winning by 1.5 seconds.
The Spartans will be idle next weekend as they prepare to defend their Big Ten Championship on April 29 in St. Paul, Minn.
