PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Spartan distance runners got another strong performance, this time from junior Phil Marlatt (Williamston, Mich.), on the final day of competition at the Stanford Invitational. Marlatt posted a time of 1:50.42, placing 10th in the 800-meter competition Saturday, to become the fifth Michigan State distance runner to post a top-20 finish over the weekend.
"I'm happy with out performances," said interim head coach Walt Drenth. "For a lot of the guys to challenge provisional qualifying times in our first outdoor race is a good sign of things to come this season. As we begin to get more and more competitions under our belt, I think we'll start to put up some great times."
On Friday, during day one action, the Spartans were led by an eighth-place finish in the section 'B' 10,000 meters from junior Matt Bartlebaugh (Jackson, Mich.). Classmate Jim Pancoast (Stevensville, Mich.) ran a 1,500-meter time of 3:51.98 to post an 11th-place finish in the section 'B' finals.
In the 5,000 meters, section 'B' competition, Michigan State senior Nick Oertel (Goodrich, Mich.) and sophomore Stephan Shay (East Jordan, Mich.) placed 16th and 17th, respectively.
The Spartans return to the state of Michigan next weekend, when they travel to the Central Michigan Invitational on April 8. The following weekend, MSU will play host to the 2006 Spartan Invitational at the Ralph Young track facility on the campus of Michigan State University.
