Charlottesville, Va. - The No. 13 MSU varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight each raced to victory on Saturday at the Rivanna Reservoir against the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers. The second varsity lost by a nose to its Cavalier counterpart, but the team's efforts were its best of the young season.
"We had a great day of racing in Virginia," Michigan State rowing coach Matt Weise said of his team's efforts. "The team did a nice job being more consistent this week than in the past, and they were much more composed."
The Spartan varsity eight downed Virginia by a length, clocked at 6:35.5; the Cavalier shell crossed the line at 6:40.6, a full five seconds behind MSU.
"They're starting to find their stride a little bit," Weise said of the Spartan varsity. "We made a couple switches from last week, which increased our horsepower, and now the they are focusing more as a boat."
The varsity four (7:35.2) defeated both the A-Flight (7:41.2) and B-Flight (7:58.5) Cavalier fours. The MSU first novice eight (7:04.0) also finished well ahead of both the first (7:10.0) and second (7:41.0) novice squads from Virginia.
"The four needs to work on its start, but the body of its race is very good," Weise said, "and the novices get better every week."
The second varsity put in a strong performance as well, rowing from start to finish in 6:44.1. However, the time was not fast enough to down Virginia's entry, which finished the race in 6:42.2.
"Virginia is going to be a much stronger team in three or four weeks," Weise said. "Then again, so are we."
