East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State rowing program has earned a bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships. The championships will be held May 26-28 at Finn Caspersen Rowing Center in West Windsor, N.J.. This will be the seventh consecutive season that the Spartans have been invited to the National Championship Regatta.
"We're very excited about our selection," beamed head coach Matt Weise after the announcement of the field. "Our crews did a great job at Sprints, and we still have some time to prepare and places to improve."
Twelve teams and four additional varsity eight shells get invited to the NCAA Regatta. The other 11 invitees include defending National Champion Cal, four-time champion Brown, three-time titlist Washington, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Princeton, Stanford, Tennessee Washington State, Wisconsin, and Yale. The four invited varsity eight entries will represent Boston University, Minnesota, Southern California, and UCLA.
"The field, as always, is competitive," admitted Weise. "There is no such thing as a slow heat - the crew needs to be ready to go from the first time they line up. They really need to be on top of their game from the beginning."
The Spartans finished 10that last year's event, held on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California. The MSU varsity finished 11th, while the second varsity was fifth and the varsity four eighth.
