East Lansing, Mich. - Senior rower Christen Brown (Tecumseh, Mich.) has been named a 2006 Pocock First Team All-America by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Brown, a two-time all-region selection and two-time First Team All-Big Ten pick, earns All-America honors for the first time in her career.
Brown, who graduates as one of the most decorated rowers in MSU program history, helped the Spartans to their finest season as a varsity program. The varsity eight recently rowed to an sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championship regatta, the highest-ever finish for the Spartan entry. In addition, MSU finished sixth as a team at the regatta, as the second varsity eight (seventh) and varsity four (sixth) also turned in strong performances.
"Christen has been the teams strongest physical presence for the last three years and turned herself into a great team leader during this past season," commented head coach Matt Weise. "This award is well deserved and caps a number of achievements while at MSU."
The senior is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year for rowing before earning All-Big Ten and All-Central Region honors in both her junior and senior campaigns. She is currently participating in the senior national team camp in Princeton, NJ for a spot on the US team for the World Championships later this summer.
The Pocock All-America awards are designed to recognize outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. In addition to receiving an individual award, each rower's school will receive a school award to be displayed in their boathouse.
