EAST LANSING, Mich. - Under the direction of third-year head coach Matt Weise, the Michigan State women's rowing team will open fall competition against the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich. on Saturday. The teams will compete in a series of four-minute races to test their fitness against competitors at the beginning of the year.
"Having an early race is a good way for us to keep people engaged over the summer," said Weise.
The Spartans ended last season by posting the highest-ever team finish for MSU (sixth place) at the NCAA Championship. The Spartans return 12 letterwinners, including five members of the varsity eight, to the roster of 37. Seniors Roz Bialczak and Paula Thoms represented their class last season in the varsity eight which finished sixth at the NCAA Championship, seventh at the South/Central Regional Championship, and fourth at the Big Ten Championship. Senior Jenna Peters was last spring's lone junior in the second varsity eight that finished seventh at the NCAA Championship, third at the South/Central Regional Championship, and second at the Big Ten Championship. Sophomore coxswain Tamara Yantovsky is the only returning member of the varsity four that finished sixth last spring at the NCAA Championship, fourth at the South/Central Regional Championship, and second at the Big Ten Championship.
