EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Green squad opened a close game wide open by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to defeat the White, 9-3, Thursday at Kobs Field. The win evened the Green-White World Series 1-1.
Sophomore Eli Boike started the big inning off with a walk, and he would score on a single by freshman Tyler Newsome. Junior Johnny Lee then doubled down the left-field line to score Newsome and put the Green, coached by MSU assistant coach Tony Baldwin, up 5-3.
A Brandon Doherty sac fly scored Lee to push the advantage to three with two runners on. Senior Steve Gerstenberger then delivered the parting shot, a three-run home run into the trees in right field that provided the final margin.
The Green led 3-2 until junior A.J. Shindler walked and scored on a botched double play to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
Junior Nolan Moody started on the mound for the Green, allowing two runs in four innings and striking out two. Junior Peter Wolff threw three shutout innings of relief for the White.
Shindler scored two runs for the White, with the other run coming on a single by senior Justin Potes. Freshman Andy Johnson also plated a run for the White, which won Wednesday's game one, 1-0.
The final game of the Green-White World Series is set for Friday at 3:30 p.m.
