Kickoff

The 18th-ranked Michigan State men's soccer team (11-4-3, 2-3-1 Big Ten) host the 2007 Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship Nov. 8-11 at Old College Field. The seven-team tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. with No. 3 Northwestern vs. No. 6 Wisconsin. Game 2 features No. 2 Ohio State against No. 7 Michigan. MSU will play Penn State Thursday at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Spartans

The Spartans have established themselves among the best teams in the nation this season, having spent four weeks in the NSCAA Top 25. Fifth-year senior Chris Austin (0.84 GAA) has played every minute in goal this season, and he plays in front of a defense anchored by seniors Rauwshan McKenzie and John Folino, junior Dave Hertel and sophomore Tim Granaderos. Junior forward Doug DeMartin (11g, 0a - 22) is the Big Ten's leading scorer and MSU's top offensive threat. Senior co-captain Kenzo Webster (4g, 6a - 14), the other starting forward, was MSU's leading scorer in 2006. Junior Zac Scaffidi leads the midfield corps along with seniors Kevin Reiman and Ryan Dick and freshman Spencer Thompson.

MSU IN THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT

Michigan State is 12-15 all-time in the Big Ten Championship, which has been played annually since 1991. The Spartans have a 3-4 record when playing as the fifth seed. MSU won the tournament title in 2004 as the No. 5 seed.

HATS OFF TO DEMARTIN

Doug DeMartin has been one of the top forwards in the Big Ten this season. The Mason, Mich., leads the Big Ten with 11 goals, and 22 including three tallies in MSU's win against Western Michigan on Oct. 24. He also leads the league in points (22) and shots (65). DeMartin has 20 career goals and 46 career points.

MSU, PSU TIE IN FIRST MEETING

The Spartans and Nittany Lions tied, 2-2, in their regular season match-up at Old College Field on Sept. 23. Kenzo Webster and Louis Stephens III scored for MSU, while Jason Yeisley tallied both of Penn State's goals. The match was a shootout, as the two squads fired 17 shots on goal and 33 tries overall.

`300'

Head coach Joe Baum is the second coach in Big Ten history to reach 300 career wins, following former Indiana boss Jerry Yeagley. Baum reached the 300-win plateau in MSU's 2-1 double-overtime win at Vermont on Sept. 9. The 31-year head coach, now boasts a 307-221-51 ledger at the helm of the Michigan State men's soccer program.
