EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former MSU women's diving co-captain Amy Schmidt has been named the Fall 2007 Outstanding Senior. Schmidt, who is completing her degree in kinesiology and dietetics, was nominated for the award by MSU faculty and staff members, and she was voted the award winner by members of this year's Michigan State University Senior Class Council.
Schmidt, a native of Grand Ledge, Mich., who currently owns a 3.695 grade point average, was nominated by Department of Kinesiology professor Gail Dummer. Schmidt has been a Teacher's Assistant in Dummer's class for two semesters and is now doing an undergraduate internship under Dummer's supervision.
"Amy has done a lot of great work for our department, and that's what prompted me to nominate her for this award," Professor Dummer said. "She is certainly very deserving of this honor."
Schmidt, who completed her diving eligibility in 2007, was a four-time NCAA regional qualifier and was a finalist at the regional three times. A two-time Spartan Diver of the Year, she led the team in individual scoring at the Big Ten Championships last year. She was named Academic All-Big Ten four times and was a two-time All-Academic honoree by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Schmidt was also the first recipient of the Kevin Zielinski Heart Award, presented to the seniors on the MSU men's and women's swimming & diving teams who best represents the team in academic, athletic and leadership contributions. The award is the program's most prestigious honor.
"Amy's academic and athletic achievements are spectacular, but her caring and concerns for others is what makes her special," MSU head diving coach Eric Best said. "She has a level of humility that I've never seen in as talented of a person as she is.
"She is one of the most respected athletes I've ever coached, by both teammates and coaches. Amy is very special, and I am very proud of her."
The senior class council will present the award in a reception at the East Lansing Marriott on April 6.
