Swimmers, Divers Claim Victory at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept Ball State Saturday, with the men's team winning, 149-94, and the Spartan women taking a 136-107 decision. The men won 10 of 13 events, while the women claimed nine. Sho Koba, Adam Schmitt and Marlys Fuqua each won two swimming events and Danielle Williams and Ivan Zalessov won both diving events for the Spartans.
MSU enjoyed one of their top performances of the season. Senior Adam Schmitt won the 1,000 free by over 22 seconds, clocking a time of 9:34.64. Freshman kevin Puskaric (1:44.89) and sophomore Joe Schmitt (1:45.13) took the top two spots in the 200 free, respectively. Koba and fellow sophomore Gabe Strickler did the same in the 200 IM, while Ivan Zalessov won both diving events.
"We had a number of good swims, and Ivan had an incredible meet," head coach Matt Gianiodis said.
The men continued their dominance in the second half of the meet, as freshman Ricky Forrest and sophomore Matt Massman won the 200 fly (1:55.28) and 100 free (47.90), respectively. Adam Schmitt placed first in the 200 back (1:55.46) while sophomore Marcus Poteete touched the wall first in the 200 breast (2:10.33) and Koba captured a 500 free win (4:44.33).
Fuqua led the women's team by winning the 1,000 free (10:27.68) and 500 free (5:06.90) while Williams placed first in one- and three-meter diving. Junior Heather Kiluk won the 200 IM (2:07.86) and sophomore Julie Kahn won the 100 free with a time of 54 seconds flat. Freshman Stephanie Fisher won the 200 back (2:06.07) while sophomore Sarah Biasello won the final women's individual event of the day, clocking a 2:23.47 in the 200 breast. The MSU women also won the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
"The women's score got a little close at the end, but we gave a great effort," Gianiodis said. "Julie Kahn had a great swim in the 100 free and Marlys Fuqua was very solid."
The Spartans are done with competition for the 2007 calendar year and will return to the pool on Jan. 11 at Valparaiso.
