
Spartan Rowing Captures First In Three Races At Home Invitational

LAINGSBURG, Mich. - The Michigan State rowing team captured three of the five races against Ohio State in the morning heats of the Michigan State Big Ten Invitational.
In the novice eight race, Michigan State jumped out at the start with a slight lead that extended to an entire length with 1000 meters remaining. The crew of coxswain Vicky Grygar, stroke Clare Adamus, Alex Maibusch, Dhanielle Tobias, Jessica Vandenberg, Katie Hood, Megan Kursik, Amanda Dunnill, and bow Daryl Lederle crossed the line in 7:15.30, with open water on the crew from Ohio State, which finished in 7:24.10.
Michigan State's second and third varsity fours came down next. The second varsity four finished in 8:28.40, followed by the third four which came in at 8:58.40. Both crews were defeated by the Ohio State second varsity four, which crossed the line in 8:16.93.
Ohio State's varsity four jumped out to an early lead, but MSU (coxswain Allison Duffy, stroke Catie Tyzo, Victoria Woodard, Julie Ward and bow Nancy Diehl) got back to even at the 1000 meter mark. The Spartans (7:56.75) finished three seats up on the Buckeyes (7:57.50).
"We all had trust that we were going to make the move together," said stroke seat Catie Tyzo. "We knew it was time to go, and we did it together."
In the next race, the Michigan State second eight opened up with the lead at the 250 meter mark and by the 1250 meter mark had a length lead. Under the direction of coxswain Tamara Yantovsky, stroke Sarah Schmidt, Jenna Peters, Michelle Mussett, Emily Regan, Kate Taylor, Danica Bevan, Ashley Wenneman and bow Lauren Gamble crossed the line at 6:56.53, with open water over the Buckeyes (7:01.63).
In the final morning race the No. 20 MSU varsity eight (6:51.76) was defeated by the No.3-ranked Ohio State eight (6:46.66). Ohio State grabbed six seats by the 500 meter mark and ended the race with a boat length of open water.
