EAST LANSING, Mich.-No. 19 Michigan State travels to Boston, Mass. to face No. 16 Radcliffe (Harvard), No.4 Yale and Boston Universtiy on Saturday, April 21 on the Charles River. This will be the final race of the regular season for the Spartans. The morning session against Radcliffe and Yale is set to begin at 7 a.m. MSU will finish off the afternoon in a scrimmage against Boston University. The two schools will race the first 1000 meters, paddle for 500 meters, and race out the final 500 meters on the course.
Your Michigan State Spartans
Last weekend, Michigan State faced Big Ten opponents No. 3 Ohio State, Indiana and No. 11 Michigan in its lone home race of the season at Lake Ovid in Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg, Mich. The varsity eight had spilt results, falling to the Buckeyes in the morning, but rebounding to defeat the Hoosiers in the afternoon race. The second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight topped both Ohio State and Indiana. The Spartan second and third varsity four finished in second and third, respectively, against both Ohio State and Indiana.
The Radcliffe Black and White
Radcliffe (Harvard) opened last weekend against USC, Dartmouth, and Syracuse on the Charles River Challenge. Current No. 1 USC came out victorious in each of the varsity events, while the Radcliffe varsity eight finished third. The second varsity eight and four each finished second, and the novice eight placed third. In the first-ever meeting between Radcliffe and Columbia, Radcliffe came out on top in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight.
The Yale Bulldogs
On Saturday, April 14 the Bulldogs defeated ninth-ranked Princeton to win the Eisenberg Cup. The team won four of the five races to seal the victory. The varsity eight extended its winning streak to four, after recording a winning time of 5:58.00, to finish 1.7 seconds ahead of the Tigers.
The Boston University Terriers
Last weekend the Terriers opened against Brown on Friday, followed by competition in the inaugural Charles River Challenge on Saturday and Sunday. Former No. 1 Brown earned the Arlene Gorton Cup by securing first place in all five races over Boston University on Friday. On Saturday, each of the varsity boats finished in second place, with current No. 1 USC grabbing first in the varsity events. Radcliffe finished first in the second varsity four. The novice eight closed out the afternoon with a first-place finish for the Terriers. On Sunday, the second varsity eight and second varsity four captured first-place finishes, while the varsity eight finished in third behind Texas and Syracuse.
The Spartan Varsity Eight
The Michigan State varsity eight, currently ranked No. 19, owns a 3-4 record for the season against some of the nation's top competition. The varsity eight of Katie Bitz, Roz Bialczak, Joanna Brown, Erika Shaw, Michelle Mussett, Paula Thoms, Sarah Schmidt and Kate Burdick posted its fastest time of the season against Duke, a 6:30.00. MSU defeated then-No. 19 Michigan in its opening race of the season, while each of the Spartans' losses have come at the hands of an opponent ranked in the CRCA/USRowing Top 15.
The 2007 Spartan Squad
Under the direction of head coach Matt Weise, Michigan State will look to earn its 10th-straight bid to the NCAA Championships in 2007. The Spartans return eight members of last seasons' three NCAA Championship boats, including five members of the varsity eight. Seniors Roz Bialczak and Paula Thoms have competed in the varsity eight in each of their first three years at MSU, helping the boat to a school-best sixth at the NCAA Championships last season. Juniors Joanna Brown, Kate Burdick and Anne Cowan are also returning from last seasons' varsity eight. Senior Jenna Peters, junior coxswain Katie Bitz and sophomore Sarah Schmidt return from the 2006 second varsity eight, while junior coxswain Tamara Yantovsky is the lone returning member of last seasons' varsity four.
