
Spartans In Second Place After 36 Holes

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 26th-ranked Michigan State men's golf team stands in second place after 36 holes at the Big Ten Championship held at the par-71, 7,444-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans shot a 298 in the first round and a 295 in the second round for a 25-over-par 593, two strokes behind Purdue (23-over-par 591). Senior Matt Harmon leads the team with a low score of 2-over-par 144 for a second-place finish after day one.
"The team played hard today and we put together two decent rounds," head coach Mark Hankins said. "Matt and Ryan (Brehm) continue to give us the leadership we need to compete for a Big Ten Championship."
Michigan State leads third-place Minnesota (32-over-par 600) by seven strokes and fourth-place Wisconsin and Northwestern (33-over-par 601) by eight.
Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul leads the tournament with 1-under 141 and leads MSU's Harmon by three strokes.
Harmon, who won the Kepler Intercollegiate two weeks ago on the same course, improved on his 73 in the first round for a 71 in the second that included three birdies and 12 pars, moving up from a tie for fifth to second after day one.
Junior Brehm is in a tie for fourth after combining three birdies and 27 pars for a 3-over-par 145. Sophomore Grant Tungate bettered his first round score of 78 with a 74 in the second to tie for 22nd with a 10-over 152. Freshman Jack Newman had identical rounds of 77 for a 12-over-par 154 and sophomore Steve Cuzzort rounded out the Green and White as he finished with a 17-over 159.
The Spartans still have two more days of competition. The team will play 18 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.
