EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis has announced the Spartans' schedule for the 2007-08 season. A grand total of 15 regular-season meets have been scheduled between both the men's and women's programs, with 13 of the contests on the road.
"The one thing that stands out is the lack of home meets," said Gianiodis. "This year was difficult for us to secure teams to come to our facility. We also owed a lot of schools return trips. That means we will be on the road quite a bit next year and hopefully that experience will help us in February."
The Spartans open the season at home, with the annual Green & White Meet, slated for Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. The following day (Oct. 13), the Spartans invite all former Spartan swimmers back for the annual Alumni Meet, set for 9 a.m.
Exactly one week after the Alumni Meet, the women's team takes on Illinois, in its first home meet, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
The following Friday (Oct. 26), both the men's and women's teams will battle Big Ten foe Iowa, in Iowa City, at 5 p.m.
Up next for both squads will be a trip to Olean, N.Y., on Thursday Nov. 8 and a meet with head coach Matt Gianiodis' alma mater, St. Bonaventure, slated to start at 5 p.m. The following day (Nov. 9), the teams will continue their East Coast road trip, as they take on both Penn State and Virginia in a tri-meet set to begin at 5 p.m., in State College, Pa. The next morning (Nov. 10), all three schools will face off again, with a morning meet slotted for 11 a.m.
Next on tap for the Spartans is the Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, in Columbus, Ohio.
The Spartans continue their lengthy road trip on Saturday, Dec. 8 as they head to Ball State to take on the Cardinals in a meet scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The first meet of the New Year will take place on Friday, Jan. 11, with both the men and the women heading to Valparaiso, Ind., to take on Valparaiso University. The meet with the Crusaders begins at 6 p.m.
The following day, the Spartans travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for a noon meet with the Purdue Boilermakers.
Both the men and the women travel to in-state rival Michigan on Friday, Jan. 18 for a 5 p.m. showdown.
The next day (Jan. 19), the Spartans travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a tri-meet with Eastern Michigan and Ohio State beginning at 4 p.m.
The Spartans finally return home for their regular-season finale on Friday Jan. 25 as both the men and the women take on Oakland University at 6 p.m.
The women open Big Ten post-season action, as they head to the campus of Ohio State, to battle at the 2008 Big Ten Championships, Feb. 14-16 while the men follow suit one week later, as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for their Big Ten Championships outing.
The NCAA Diving Zones are set for March 2-4, with a location still to be determined.
The 2008 Women's NCAA Championships are set for March 14-16 in Columbus, Ohio, while the Men's NCAA Championships are the next week in Federal Way, Wash.
