Spartans Eighth at South/Central Sprints

Oak Hill, Tenn. - The Michigan State rowing team raced to an eighth-place overall team finish (sixth in the Central Region) at the 2007 Aramark South/Central Sprints, contested on Molton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Spartans finished with 301 points, just five points behind Michigan. Virginia took home titles in the varsity eight, second varsity, varsity four, and novice eight events to claim the overall team title with 440 points. Ohio State's 336 points were good for first in the Central Region and second overall.
The top finishing Spartan boat on the day was the second varsity, which finished fourth in a time of 6:46.70. Virginia took the race in a time of 6:37.60, crossing the finish two seats ahead of Minnesota (6:38.71). The Spartans were just over a half length behind third-place finisher Wisconsin (6:44.07).
The varsity boat took tenth overall (fourth in the petite final) in a time of 6:46.70. A time of 6:36.40 by Louisville allowed the Cardinals to take seventh in the event and capture the petite final, while Michigan was second (eighth overall) in 6:39.18. In the grand final of the event, Virginia's time of 6:30.4 had the Cavaliers crossing the line nearly a full length ahead of second-place Ohio State (6:33.92), while Notre Dame was two seats behind. 6:34.68
The novice eight had an impressive day, posting a fifth-place finish in the grand final for the second-highest finis for the Spartans in the Sprints. Their time of 7:05.62 was less than half a second behind fourth-place Wisconsin (7:05.09). Virginia navigated the course in a time of 6:51.90, two lengths ahead of second--place Kansas State; Michigan finished third.
The varsity four won the petite final to take seventh overall. The four completed the course in a time of 7:44.60, posting a two-seat win over second-place Michigan. The archrivals were nearly a length ahead of third-place Central Florida, which navigated the course in a time of 7:49.43.
Selections for the NCAA Championship regatta will be made on Tuesday at 4 p.m. eastern time; the event will be held on Molton Hill Lake and the University of Tennessee will serve as host of the event.
