
Incoming Baseball Recruiting Class Update

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head baseball coach David Grewe and his assistants Tony Baldwin and Danny Lopaze are bringing in another top-notch recruiting class to East Lansing this fall. Here's an updated look at the signees and how they fared during their senior seasons:
AJ Achter (RHP/OF, 6-5, 190, Oregon, Ohio/Clay High School)
Achter's high school team went 27-3, setting a school record for wins in a season which was previously held by the 1979 team, which his father played on...Clay HS won first Toledo City League Championship in the school's four-year history in the league...team won district title for the second year in a row...team was ranked as high as No. 4 in the state and finished No. 12...batted .429 with one homer, 27 RBI, 30 runs and 10 stolen bases...was 7-1 on the mound with a 0.93 ERA, with the only loss coming to sixth-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius...gave up just eight earned runs and 22 hits in 60 innings pitched with 102 strikeouts...named first-team all-state, all-city and all-district...Toledo City League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP...earned Mizuno All-Ohio honors and played for Team Ohio in the Sunbelt Classic...rated fifth best prospect in the state of Ohio...earned team batting award (highest batting average) and team MVP honors...named the James F. O'Brien Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, the most prestigious athletic award at Clay High School.
Jeffrey Holm (OF/1B/LHP, 6-2, 180, St. Charles, Ill./North High School)
Named a top prospect by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA), Perfect Game and Truth Prep Baseball Report...IHSBCA first-team all-state and all-area...unanimous pick for all-conference team...all-state special mention by the Chicago Tribune...named all-area by Chicago Sun Times, Daily Herald, Elgin Courier, Kane County Chronicle and Chicago Suburban News...named team's MVP...North High School was ranked No. 9 in the state and went 30-6 on the year, establishing single-season team record for wins while winning conference and regional titles...Holm batted .382 and led the team with 35 RBI and 39 runs...set North's single-season stolen base record with 34...on the mound, went 6-0 with an area-best 0.59 ERA...recorded victories at regionals and sectionals...earned All-Academic conference honors for the third time...listed as a member of "Who's Who Among High School Students" and graduated with high honors.
Brandon Eckerle (OF/RHP, 6-0, 175, Durand, Mich./Corunna High School)
Named first-team all-state for Division 2 as an outfielder...also selected to the Dream Team...played in the Michigan High School All-Star Game at Comerica Park...named Male Outstanding Athlete of the Year at Corunna High School...finished senior season with a .574 average at the plate with two homers, 10 doubles, nine triples and 35 RBI...on the mound, compiled a 7-2 record and 0.63 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 44.2 innings...tossed consecutive no-hitters - May 17 vs. Portland and May 22 vs. Ovid-Elsie...finished career with 184 hits, 145 runs, 28 doubles, 16 triples, four homers, 93 RBI and a .510 batting average.
Tyler Newsome (LHP/OF, 6-1, 190, Palos Heights, Ill./Marist High School)
Named conference and area player of the year...garnered first-team all-state honors by the Prep Baseball Report...had a .463 batting average in conference games with five homers, 32 RBI and 38 walks...on the mound, was a perfect 8-0 with a 2.40 ERA...led team to conference championship...drafted in the 49th round by the Baltimore Orioles in June's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Jonathan Roof (SS, 6-1, 150, Paducah, Ky./St. Mary's High School)
A first-team all-state selection and Kentucky All-Star pick...received his team's hitting and gold glove awards...collected a .505 batting average with six homers and 26 RBI...compiled an impressive .598 on-base percentage...had 46 hits, including 14 doubles, three homers and six home runs...swiped 29 bases in 30 attempts...during the regional tournament, went 9-for-10 at the plate with a home run, nine RBI and four walks in the three games...was drafted in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June by the Boston Red Sox.
Andrew Webb (RHP, 6-1, 190, Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park High School)
First-team all-state selection as a pitcher...named to the all-metro, all-district and all-area teams...named to the Downriver Dream Team...went a perfect 9-0 on the mound with a 0.67 ERA...in 52 innings of action, he struck out 76, walked 11 and gave up just 27 hits...at the plate, hit .383 with 25 runs, seven doubles, 32 RBI and 18 walks.
Seth Williams (C/RHP, 5-8, 205, Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison HS)
Named Edison High School Offensive Player of the Year...first-team all-district and all-region as a catcher...district player of the year...second-team all-state...Washington Post Northern Virginia and all-metro first-team selection...named to the 2007 Greater DC All-Area Baseball team by Rise Magazine...went 4-1 on the mound with a 0.95 ERA...at the plate, compiled a .451 batting average and .570 on-base percentage.
