EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior swimmer Adam Schmitt (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after setting a pool record last Friday against Oakland. Schmitt won both sprint freestyles and swam the lead leg of the 400 free relay to lead the Michigan State swimming team to a 144-99 win over Oakland. The honor is Schmitt's first this season. The Big Ten office made the announcement on Tuesday.
Schmitt, a team tri-captain, broke a 13-year-old pool record with his 1:38.34 time in the 200 free. The previous pool record was held by Cameron Mull in 1995 (1:38.63). He would later win the 100 free (44.78) and lead the 400 free relay team to a pool-record 3:01.01 effort.
"We're very happy for Adam, he has earned it," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "It's his last year and he has put in the effort. He's the kind of competitor that wants to be the swimmer of the week after the league meet at the end of the year."
Prior to his record-setting performance against the Grizzlies, Schmitt won the 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM at Ohio State. The Oakland contest was his 12th career multi-win dual meet.
The Spartan swim teams return to the pool for the Big Ten Championships in the month of February. The women's league meet is Feb. 14-16 at Ohio State, and the men's championship is Feb. 21-23 at Michigan.
