Women's Tennis Finishes Play at Northwestern Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Wildcat Invitational on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center on Sunday. Freshman Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.) was able to conclude the fall tournament with a personal ledger of 3-1 in singles play en-route to a Flight C consolation bracket crown.
After dropping the first set, 2-6, in the final round in the Flight C consolation bracket, Guentert rallied back to defeat Anna Baronayte of Akron in the final two sets, 6-3, 7-6.
Also finishing the fall tournament with a strong showing was sophomore Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.). Wilson was first able to take down Big Ten foe, Peta Forsyth, of Minnesota in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. The success did not end there as Wilson wrapped up singles play in Flight D with a defeat over Cali Gustafson of DePaul University, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Senior Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) was also able to tally a victory over Forsyth of Minnesota in the Flight D bracket, 6-4, 6-3.
In Doubles action, partners Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) and Lindsey Lonergan (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished the tournament strong with a victory over Brittany Baldy and Kristin Gray of Oklahoma, 8-3. Also concluding the tournament with a doubles victory was Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) and Ally Wickman (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Together, Ivanova and Wickman were able to defeat the tandem of Forsyth and Liz Tusler of Minnesota, 8-5.
Over the course of the three-day tournament, the Spartans, as a team, tallied 13 singles victories and five doubles wins.
The Spartans will be back in action as they will play host to the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Oct. 23-28 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The ITA Midwest Regional will mark the conclusion of fall play for the Spartans.
