EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 2009 Michigan State rowing program will continue its slate of fall races this Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, squaring off against Ohio State and Michigan, in a series of controlled races. Each crew will compete in five races that are capped at 26 strokes per minute. The distance of the races will also be trimmed from the customary 2,000 meters to 1,200. Each race will last roughly five minutes.
"This race is another opportunity for us to test our ability to execute technical efficiency under racing conditions," head coach Matt Weise said. "I am looking for an improved performance as compared to our race two weeks ago. In that race we struggled to execute in some rough water conditions. We allowed outside influences to disrupt our performance. I am looking for this team to have an ability to use outside distractions as challenges to reach a higher performance."
The Spartans had a strong showing in their series of races with Michigan two weeks ago on Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich. Although no official results were kept, MSU won all five races over Michigan and will look to build on that performance this weekend as they clash with two Big Ten rivals. The fall races serve as a chance to develop the student-athletes in real-race scenarios before the start of the spring season.
MSU will return home to the Grand River on October 26 and 27 to take on Michigan for the third time this season.
