EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team heads to Greensboro, N.C. for its penultimate tournament of the fall on Monday and Tuesday, as the Spartans take part in the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. Tournament play begins on Monday with 36 holes and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
The Spartans are currently ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin national poll, one of seven schools in the field among the nation's top-50. MSU is the highest ranked, followed by Pepperdine (29), Minnestoa (32), Duke (37), defending-champion Louisville (41), Michigan (44) and Mississippi State (47). The tournament will be played Forest Oaks Country Club, a long-time host of the PGA Tour's Greater Greensboro Open. The course will play at 7,197 yards and at a par 72.
Sophomore Jack Newman leads the Spartans so far this fall with a 72.30 stroke average and three top-20 finishes. Newman's play ranks him No. 61 by Golfweek/Sagarin. Three other Spartans are averaging 73.50 or lower so far this season. Sophomore Graham Baillargeon (73.30) paces the trio, having team-best two top-10 finishes, including winning the season-opening Spartan Classic. Senior Randy Hutchison and sophomore Payne Gniewek are both averaging 73.50. Hutchison is the lone MSU golfer with two top-five placements, including his first collegiate win at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in early October. Redshirt freshman Philip Snow will be making his collegiate debut this week as the fifth Spartan.
