EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 2008-09 Michigan State rowing squad swept a series of races from Michigan Sunday morning on the Grand River. The Spartans raced four novice boats against three from Michigan in two separate flights, with MSU's "A" and "B" boats earning victories over the "A" and "B" boats from Michigan. Both the Spartans "C" and "D" boats earned a victory over the "C" boat from Michigan in the final race of the day.
"Our team raced great today," said head coach Matt Weise. "They showed an ability to keep their composure in some bad weather."
The races marked the first time this fall that the Spartans have competed on their home course. MSU has competed against Michigan in all three of its fall races, earning victories in each race. During the fall, the Spartans have not lost a race to any opponent.
Each race was capped at 26 strokes per minute. The distance of the races were also trimmed from the customary 2,000 meters to 1,200, with each race lasting roughly five minutes. The format is designed to simulate a real-race experience for the novices and give the team a chance to react to the boat in real-race situations.
The Spartans will close their fall season on Nov. 2 as they will take part in the Big Ten Challenge at Blue Island, Ill.
