EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team fell to No. 21 Illinois, 3-0, Friday (Oct. 3) night in Champaign, Ill. The Spartans are now 10-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Illini improve to 8-4 and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
The two teams played even for the first 40 minutes, each registering five shots. However, it was Illinois that broke the stalemate in the 41st minute when Marissa Mykines scored to make it 1-0 heading into the half.
The Illini and Spartans traded chances in the second but it was Illinois that capitalized, scoring twice in just over five minutes, in the 74th and 79th minute, respectively, to make the score 3-0. Both goals came off corner kicks.
Illinois outshot MSU 14-9 for the game. Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege made five saves for the Spartans.
MSU will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday (Oct. 5) when it takes on Purdue at 1 p.m. EDT.
