EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf program will host the inaugural Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Nov. 3-4 at the Haig Point Club on Daufuskie Island, S.C. The tournament, which will wrap up fall play for the Spartans, consists of 54 holes and features 11 schools. Play begins on Monday at 8 a.m. with 36 holes and conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
Six of the 11 schools are among the top-100 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, plus Methodist is ranked second in Division III by Golfstat. South Carolina enters the event No. 7 in the nation by Golfweek, followed by Michigan State at No. 22, Tulsa (31), Georgia State (51), San Diego State (54) and Eastern Michigan (77). Rounding out the field is Idaho, Jackson State, Tennessee State and Troy.
The Spartans are coming off a second place finish at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate this past week. Sophomore Payne Gniewek tied for first individually, marking his first career collegiate victory. Gniewek was one of three MSU golfers in the top-15, as junior Jack Newman tied for ninth and sophomore Graham Baillargeon tied for 13th. Michigan State has had four golfer finish first in a tournament so far this fall - Baillargeon beat Newman in a playoff to win the Spartan Classic and senior Randy Hutchison claimed the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. As a team, the Spartans have placed among the top-four in four of the five fall events, including a win at the Spartan Classic.
MSU's lineup this week will consist of Baillargeon, Gniewek, Hutchison, Newman and senior Jordan Ensrud.
