Columbus, Ohio - The Michigan State women's swimming & diving team finished 10th in the Big Ten Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, which ended Saturday at Ohio State's McCorkle Natatorium. The Spartans, who set three school records during the three-day event, competed in just the 400 free relay in Saturday's finals. MSU's 102 points more than doubled last year's 11th-place total of 44.
I'm proud of the kids," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "We fought through a lot of adversity this year, and we competed really hard."
MSU finished 10th in the 400 free relay, the Spartans' last event as a team this season. The quartet of Julie Kahn, Heather Kiluk, Stephanie Fisher and Erinn Wertz registered a 3:25.74.
"Our relay team did an outstanding job," Gianiodis said.
Minnesota won the team title with 600.5 points, edging Michigan (609).
Michigan State, which had no seniors on its roster this season, was the youngest team at the league meet. Every student-athlete on the team has eligibility to return next season.
"Last year, we finished last with 44 team points," Gianiodis said. "With no seniors, we did a great job. This is something we hope to build on in the future."
The Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships will be held next weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., , beginning on Thursday, Feb. 28.
