Heather Kiluk broke her own school record in the 400 IM and then swam the lead leg of the Spartans' record -setting 800 free relay team. Junior Marlys Fuqua, sophomore Mara Loniewski and freshman Stephanie Fisher also competed in the relay. MSU remains in 10th in the standings with 88 points. Minnesota leads the pack (420.5), followed by Michigan (407) and Indiana (335).
Kiluk, who set a school record in the 200 IM on Thursday, continued her stong weekend with a 4:20.95 in the 400 IM, good for 15th place. The time is also good for the NCAA 'B' qualifying standard.
Junior diver Danielle Williams gave one of her top efforts of the season in three-meter diving, posting a total of 313.15 for a sixth-place finish. She was just 2.60 points behind Northwestern's Leanne Dumais for a top 5 finish.
"We have already doubled our team points total from last year," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "Even though we're a bit short-handed because of injuries, the team is doing a great job. I'm very proud of what they have accomplished so far this weekend."
Fisher gave a strong effort in the 100 back, posting a 56.03 in the prelims before clocking a 56.10 in the final round. She finished 15th in the event.
MSU closed Friday's finals with the record-setting effort in the 800 free relay. The Spartans finished ninth in the event.
The Big Ten also announced its sportsmanship honorees for women's swimming, with each team getting one nominee. MSU's sportsmanship honoree is Julie Kahm. She now is eligible to win the overall Big Ten sportsmanship award at the end of the school year.
The third and final day of the Big Ten Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will begin Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. with the 200 back.
