EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf program began the 2008-09 season at the weather-shortened Spartan Classic, held Sunday at the Kingsley Club in Kingsley, Mich. The Spartans won the initial event of the season with an eight-under par 276.
Sophomore Graham Baillargeon and junior Jack Newman tied for the individual lead after the tournament's 18 holes with a pair of three-under par 68s. However, the duo would go to a playoff to determine the individual champion. Baillargeon would earn his first collegiate victory, after birdieing the first playoff hole.
Senior Randy Hutchison finished a stroke off the lead with a two-under 69 to tie for third. Classmate Jordan Ensrud posted an even-par 71 to tie for sixth and sophomore Payne Gniewek came in ninth with a two-over par 73.
The Spartans won the team title by 14 strokes over Detroit, who carded a six-over pat 290. Oakland was third with a eight-over 292, followed by Duquesne (27-over 311), McNeese State (30-over 314) and Chicago State (62-over 346).
Michigan State will return to the links on Sept. 20-21 for the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor.
